March 1, 2016: Wildfire season begins early in Alberta

March 1, 2016 News Item: Wildfire season handed a start date, and it's extra early. Alberta will officially start the season on March 1, a month earlier than usual. On that day, all burning activities in forested areas will require a burning permit, except for campfires, and training will begin for firefighters. Oneil Carlier, the province's agriculture and forestry minister, said though there may be snow on the ground in some areas, spring isn't far off, bringing with it warmer temperatures. "While it's difficult to predict what the weather conditions will be like in the weeks and months ahead, we know right now that there has been below average snow and rainfall over much of Alberta over the past few months," Carlier said.
